Grow a movement to strengthen local journalism
The CREATE Foundation saw an opportunity to lead a statewide initiative supporting local journalism. CREATE teamed up with other funders in the state, and partnered with Red Window to bring Press Forward Mississippi to life — from strategy and messaging to stakeholder alignment and digital presence.
-
Red Window serves as the consulting and communications partner for Press Forward Mississippi, helping CREATE build and lead a statewide initiative to strengthen local journalism.
Drawing on our ecosystem-based perspective, experience as former reporters, and commitment to elevating diverse voices, we shape a state-specific strategy and support stakeholder coordination, digital presence and messaging. We help align funders, universities, trade organizations and media outlets to work together toward a common goal: connecting quality journalism to stronger communities.

Empower a constructive role for local news outlets
The Community Foundation for Mississippi wanted to support local journalism in a way that centered community needs. It sought a strategy that could bring clarity for both funders and non-news audiences. With support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the foundation partnered with Red Window to create an in-depth communications project built around the method of constructive journalism, a practice that originated in Denmark.
-
Working with Danish journalists and media partners who helped pioneer the method, we adapted their tools and documented their experiences for a U.S. context. Through research with Mississippi residents — including teens and diverse adult participants — the project surfaced opportunities to rebuild trust and strengthen civic life.
Featuring original illustrations, videos and accessible messaging, the final product invites community leaders, funders and journalists to engage around shared goals. It also introduces a virtually unknown term to the U.S. that resonates deeply with many practitioners — even as debate continues within the field about whether bridging divides should be part of journalism’s role.

Clarify your niche and equip your team
The Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics wanted to sharpen its identity and expand its reach by producing timely content, events and commentary focused on First Amendment topics in the South. The university-based center partnered with Red Window to clarify its mission and create communications tools that could support both its professional staff and its student assistants.
-
Red Window translated leaders’ vision into updated messaging and a new visual identity that reflected the Overby Center’s mission and legacy. We launched the refreshed brand through a redesigned website, strategic content planning and onboarding resources that help new student contributors hit the ground running. With a unified digital presence and internal alignment, the center is better positioned to lead conversations about journalism, media and democracy in the American South.
